This year’s Ghana International Book Fair is scheduled to open on Thursday, August 18 at the forecourt of the National Theater in Accra.
The four-day event will be under the theme: “Growing the Knowledge-based Economy through Reading”.
Attracting exhibitors from the US, Turkey, Nigeria among other countries, the book fair will be opened by Second Lady Matilda Amissah-Arthur, who is an astute librarian.
Minister of Education Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang will be the Special Guest of Honour.
Under the auspices of the Ghana Book Development Council, the umbrella council of the book industry, the event is expected to attract publishers, authors, printers, illustrators and editors, among others. The Publishing Study Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology as well as the Ghana Library Association is a key stakeholder.
The first day will be dedicated to industry players, who will be taken through a number of workshops.
The Fair will then be open to the public from Friday, August 19.
Speaking to 3news.com, President of the Ghana Book Publishers Association Elliot Agyare urged parents and teachers to take advantage of the Fair to prepare for the next academic year.
A mobile library is expected to be mounted on site to encourage reading.
A tent for nationally acclaimed illustrator El Carna will also be on site for school children who will be at the Fair.
