Authorities at the Ear, Nose and Throat [ENT] Nursing School in Kumasi want government to adequately resource the school in order to train more specialist nurses for health institutions in the country.
Principal of the school, Alhaji Abdul Rahman Shaban, says every health facility in the country should have at least one ENT specialist at post, hence the need to train more specialists.
“The ENT Nursing School has trained 293 nurse specialists since it was established by the Ministry of Health 14 years ago. We still have to train more to meet demand,” he said.
He said though government has in recent times given attention to ENT services, but said infrastructure and capacity building is required to help in the effective and efficient running of the school.
Addressing the 13th graduation ceremony of the school, Alhaji Shaban, stated that the award of Advanced Diploma in ENT is being phased out with the school’s new mandate to run Bsc Nursing (ENT Option).
A total of 42 ENT nurses graduated.
The Executive Secretary of Health Training Institution Secretariat (HTIS), Christopher Beyere said an Ear, Nose and Throat health problem is common in hospitals with few specialists to attend to such cases.
He thus entreated the graduates to accept posting to where their services are needed most and work towards saving human lives.
He noted “efforts are being made by the Ministry of Health through the HTIS to equip health training institutions to be able to meet standards set by the university to enhance effective teaching and learning”.
