A total of 24 parliamentary aspirants in the Ashanti Region who filed to contest in this year’s December 7 parliamentary election have been disqualified.

At the close of nominations on September 30, a total of 240 aspirants from 12 political parties and 19 independent aspirants had filed to contest the 47 parliamentary constituency seats in the region.

But the Ashanti Regional EC Director, Serebor Quarcoo, told 3News Thursday that the Commission could not process their nomination because of the pending issues with the filing fees, which were resolved on Friday and paved the way for them to pay the GHC10,000 each on Monday.

“Twenty-four of them did not submit the GHC10,000 bank draft filing fees so those did not complete the process,” Mr Quarcoo said, adding “we do not have the power to disqualify anybody”.

Although their inability to complete the process automatically disqualifies them, the EC director said “we have not disqualified anybody…we have sent the forms to Accra”.

Both the National Democratic Congress and the New Patriotic Party who filed in all the 47 constituencies, as well as the Progressive People’s Party which filed in 25 constituencies and the Convention People’s party [35] were not affected.

Mr Quarcoo admitted though “filing for parliamentary is not difficult,” there were some administrative errors on the  nomination forms submitted by some aspirants but said they were given the opportunity on Monday to correct them.
