President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the call for a return to the four-year senior high school system, saying it is uncalled for.
The debate on the duration of SHS education has come up strongly after the release of the 2016 West Africa Senior Schools Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results.
While some have blamed the relatively poor results on the shortness of the duration of secondary education, thus calling for a return to a four-year system, others claim other factors other than the duration must be blamed.
On his official Twitter page on Friday, August 12, President Mahama joined the debate and tweeted: “The call for a return to 4yr SHS is uncalled for. 3yrs SHS is doing far better as evidenced in the graph”.

The graph showed a summary of WASSCE results in the past 10 years.
“Analysis of the trend indicates that since the WASSCE started in 2006, the years 2006 and 2007 recorded the worst performance of 12.5% and 10.6% respectively,” the graph states.
