The Abetifi by elections is underway to elect a Member of Parliament for the constituency in the eastern region following the death of Peter Wiafe Peprah who died a few months ago.
A little over 43,700 voters are expected to cast their ballot at 117 designated polling centres. Four candidates are contesting, Kenneth Katey Nikki of the United Front Party (UFP), Vida Konadu Ennin of the Independent Peoples Party (IPP), Bryan Acheampong of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Edmund Ofori Nkansah of the Convention Peoples Party (CPP).
The governing NDC pulled out of the contest stating that the timing was too close to the general electios which comes off later in the year.
Voting begun at 7am at all centers and it’s expected to close at 5pm. Turnout has been fairly okay.
TV3’s Eastern regional correspondent, Yvonne Neequaye visited some of the polling stations and reports that as of 10am only 34 voters have cast their ballot at the Library Polling centre A, out of the 658 voters expected.
Library B had 43 votes cast out of expected 671. Cultural center had 80 voters exercising the franchise out of a total of 390.
A number of other polling centers were also recording same range of turn out. A handful of voters had difficulty been verified at the Pepease LA primary and Pepease JHs school.
The late MP Peter Wiafe Peprah was to contest the 2016 elections.
