Member of Parliament for Chiana/Paga Constituency Abuga Pele has lost the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary held on Saturday, July 16.
He lost to lawyer Rudolf Amenga-Etego.
The primary was one of the few rescheduled by the ruling party.
With close to 10,000 party members casting their ballots in the primary, the embattled National Coordinator of the erstwhile Ghana Youth Employment and Entrepreneurial Development Agency (GYEEDA) was in for a close contest from two other aspirants.
Some youth of the party in the constituency, a stronghold of the NDC until 2008, had accused some party bigwigs in the run-up to the primary of scheming against Mr Pele, who had reclaimed the seat from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2012.
But after Saturday’s primary, the incumbent MP’s 4,177 votes polled were not enough to retain him as NDC’s parliamentary candidate.
Mr Amenga-Etego – who polled 4,337 votes – beat him by 160 votes.
Jonathan Nyaaba was third with 825 votes.
A total of 410 votes were rejected.
