The Accra Psychiatric Hospital risks closure in three days due to shortage of essential supplies arising out of a GHC4.1 million-debt.

Authorities at the facility on Wednesday announced a halt in new admissions, noting that the current available food and medical supplies among others will run out by the end of the week.

Suppliers have since July 1 this year, ceased providing the hospital with essential supplies like medicines, food and toiletries among others, a member of the Hospital’s communication team, Emmanuel Febiri told 3FM Thursday.

He blamed the situation on the Hospital’s indebtedness to these suppliers saying, “As at 1st July 2016, all our suppliers have stopped supplying so what we are living on now are all donations and can only last for this week”

According to him, the Hospital is struggling to survive due to lack of funds to run the facility, noting the last government subvention the facility got was in the first quarter of last year.

“We need help from the general public to raise some internal funds. We want to build a morgue for public use since we already have the fridges to help us raise some revenue,” Mr Febiri said.

Since last year, the Hospital has been charging for some essential services as a means of raising funds to provide quality services to the general public but that was stopped by the government.
