Some aggrieved residents of La, Teshie and Nungua in the Greater Accra region are demonstrating against what they describe as astronomical increases in electricity tariff.
According to them, the high cost of tariff, is severely taking a toll on them. It was organized by a group calling itself Nungua-Teshie-La (NUTELA).
About 200 aggrieved residents, including NPP parliamentary candidates for the Krowor constituency, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, and Ledzokuku, Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, joined the street protest Tuesday morning to voice out their concerns.
They carried placards with inscriptions such as: juju prepaid meter; we are tired of ECG; we are tired now, Mhama must go; light jala wa fe tsu (electricity is expensive than house); beauticians, and hair dressers are suffering from high tariff; reduce killer tariff.
The residents called on government to change the current prepaid meters in the area and bring back the postpaid meters.
“We are suffering. We want to protest against the Mahama government to change this okpongo (horse) meters, Usain Bolt meters, we don’t like this meters,” one of the organizers vented.
He threatened that residents in the three areas will vote out the NDC government if nothing is done about the situation.
NPP’s parliamentary candidate for the Krowor constituency, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye wants the energy sector levies scrapped.
“We hope the NDC government would for once listen to us, and reduce the tariff so that the ordinary people will stop suffering,” she added.
Dr Bernard Okoe Boye, the NPP parliamentary candidate for Ledzokuku, which is predominantly a fishing area, also raised concerns about the high cost of premix fuel.
The organizers told TV3’s Michael Addo they will go as far as the Flagstaff House to petition the president himself.
