Ghana is set to host a special event in the shape and likelihood of 1974’s Rumble in the Jungle to celebrate boxing legend Muhammad Ali.
The event is scheduled to be held in September, Ghana’s Minister of Youth and Sports has said.
The event will have the backing of world acclaimed boxing promoter Don King, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye told fans at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday, June 18.
Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay Jnr, died on Friday, June 3 while on admission at a Phoenix hospital in Arizona.
He was buried on June 10.
During his halcyon days, Ali visited Accra and a number of African cities including Nairobi and Cairo.
His legendary fight against George Foreman dubbed the ‘Rumble in the Jungle’ was fought in Kinshasa, Zaire now DR Congo.
Mr Vanderpuye says September’s event has been sanctioned by the African Union and it will be a 2nd Rumble in the Jungle.
“We want to celebrate Muhammad Ali in Africa,” he stressed.
He, therefore, charged the Ghana Boxing Association (GBA) to begin preparations for the event.
