Asantehene asks police to uphold professionalism

Otumfuo & IGP 1The King of the Ashanti Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has urged the Police to uphold high levels of professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

He believes instilling public trust and confidence will demand that the police go all out to deal with crime, irrespective of political colours.

The king made the statement when he received the Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor and other police commanders at the Manhyia palace in Kumasi.

The police chief is in the region to inspect police projects and also to assess the readiness of personnel ahead of the country’s general elections.

Peaceful Elections

Mr. Kudalor appealed to the Asantehene to use his influence to advise the youth against electoral violence.

“We know that your people respect your authority and we wish that you talk to the youth, especially, to refrain from all electoral related violence,” he remarked.

The Asantehene said the police need to be neutral in applying the laws to all persons irrespective of political affiliation.

“Your appointment by the government does not mean that persons aligned to the ruling party cannot be punished if they flout the law…All persons must be treated equally as the constitution demands,” Otumfuo told the IGP.

The Asantehene also urged the police head to be strong and not tilt to one side of the political divide to lose public confidence, emphasizing that the police is the pinnacle of the country’s peace and stability.

“Don’t allow the politicians to determine your role for you,” the Asantehene posited.

Kofi Boakye elevation:

The Asantehene also debunked rumours that he lobbied for the elevation of Kofi Boakye to the rank of Commissioner of Police.

“I didn’t lobby for Kofi Boakye to become COP; I thought that he had worked to merit that position so I only proposed for his elevation,” Otumfuo stated.

Commitment to Peace
Mr. Kudalor thanked Otumfuo for his counseling and promised the police will play its role to ensure peaceful polls.
