The New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidate for Kwabre East constituency, Francisca Oteng-Mensah, has presented medical supplies worth 50,000 dollars to three health facilities in the constituency.
The move forms part of her contribution towards enhancing healthcare delivery in the country.
The assorted drugs are to be used for the treatment of patients with psychiatric, diabetic, hypertensive, cancer and other conditions in the beneficiary hospitals.
They are Asonomaso Government Hospital, Mamponteng Health Centre and St Joseph Clinic at Abira, all in the Ashanti Region.
Presenting the drugs, the 23-year old Ms Oteng-Mensah said the drugs are being distributed to meet the needs of deprived patients who cannot afford to purchase medication that are not covered under the national health insurance list.
She pleaded with management of the beneficiary health institutions to ensure the drugs are used for the intended purposes to bring relief to the poor and suffering patients in the communities.
Francisca noted that “as a politician, our major focus should not only be how to get people to vote for us but we should care about the health of our people, hence, the need for me to assist in enhancing healthcare delivery”.
Dr Imrana Mahama, medical superintendent at Asonomaso Government Hospital, said the facility has been recording an increasing number of hypertension and diabetic cases but most of the patients are unable to buy the drugs.
“From January to August alone, we have recorded 94 cases of hypertension of which most of the patients cannot afford to buy prescribed drugs because they have not subscribed on the national insurance scheme, thus, the presentation of these drugs is timely,” he stated.
Dr. Mahama expressed gratitude to the young aspiring member of parliament and assured her the drugs would not be sold but given free of charge to needy patients.
Other health facilities in the constituency are expected to receive their share of the medical supplies.
