The Bongo District Assembly has granted scholarship to 15 first-year nursing students in district, with each receiving the first tranche of GHC1,000.
They are expected to periodically receive similar financial support from the assembly until they complete their course. In return, they will serve at various health facilities within the district over a stipulated period of time upon completion.
District Chief Executive of Bongo, Alexis Ayamdor Adugdaa, who revealed this at the third ordinary meeting of the second session of the seventh assembly, said the Member of Parliament in the area, Mr Albert Abongo used GHC75,000 of his share of the Common Fund to sponsor several females pursuing nursing and teaching.
The gesture, he said, has reduced the burden on parents many of whom would have had huge financial challenges in settling the school fees of their wards by themselves.
Mr Adugdaa said the Assembly has completed and furnished four CHPS compounds with funds from the District Development Fund while two more at the Amanga and Goo-Awaah communities have reached various levels of completion.
The Abokobiisi and Sikabiisi CHPS compounds as well as the Feo Clinic whose roofs were ripped off by a rainstorm in May 2016 have since been fixed by the Assembly.
Touching on Agriculture, he said the Department of Agriculture has initiated measures to register farmers in the district to benefit from government fertilizer subsidy, noting 6,428 farmers have so far been registered.
On the revenue performance of the district from January to August 2016, the DCE announced that an amount of GHC115,703.60 was collected as against an expenditure of GHC117,332.22, attributing that to a balance carried forward from December 31, 2015 to 2016.
Chief Executive Officer of the Savannah Accelerated Development Authority, Dr. Charles Abugre urged the Assembly to prospect for mineral deposits and proceed to secure land leases from the appropriate state agencies.
