A total of 10 people have died in the Central Region as a result of four days of downpour, which has caused flooding in parts of the region resulting in collapse of structures.
The National Disaster Management Organisation [NADMO] in the region is mean while advising people to take precautionary measures as more rains are expected in the coming days.
A 16-yearl-old girl died in Cape Coast when a wall collapsed on her while she was sleeping. In Komenda Edina Equafo Abirem Municipality, two ladies and an eight-year old girl were killed by a building collapse as a result of the torrential rains.
The floods also drowned two other boys aged about four years in the municipality when they fell into a pit while bathing in the rain.
In Kasoa, two people aged between one and three died when they feel into a pond while playing, while a boy of about 10 years was drowned when he fell into the River Akora in Swedru in Agona West.
“We are still under educational drive advising the citizens to be careful of themselves as the rain set in, particularly with the issue of electricity installations,” Regional Chief Disaster Manager at NADMO, Emmanuel Sandy Amartey Snr told 3News.
Speaking to our correspondent Thomas Cann, he advised people in the region to avoid getting close to electricity installations as well as desist from washing their feet under floodwater.
“We’re talking to people living around low-lying grounds to vacate their premises and either join their brothers and sisters…the rains this time is falling heavily that if you underrate the rains, you’ll be taken by surprise,” he warned.
Mr Amartey said NADMO is on educational drive appealing to everybody in the region to heed to their call to avoid more casualties as a result of the rains saying “We are appealing to everybody to heed this call in their own interest and for mother Ghana.”
NADMO Readiness
Touching on NADMO’s preparedness to respond to emergency situations, he said they are “well-equipped”, noting resources are available to take care of every situation they may be confronted with.
He, however, said that should not mean people should mismanage themselves, saying, “We’ll make sure we offer them relief but we are not going to ask people to depend on NADMO relief and to mismanaged themselves. Think of yourself first.”
