Pressure group Truth Forum has raised dissension over a recent remark by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah that “adults who take very sweet fruit juices would go down with a sickness called ‘Kalyppolities’”.

Mr Debrah, a former Eastern Region Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), made the remark at a campaign tour of his party in the Brong Ahafo Region.

The remark stems from a picture which shows leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Addo Akufo-Addo sipping fruit juice Kalyṕpo, an image that cranked up a social media photo splash hash-tagged #KalyppoChallenge.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 20, Truth Forum’s Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, who is also a deputy NPP Communications Director, described the Chief of Staff’s remarks as regrettable, saying it is a blatant affront to local industries.

“It is rather unfortunate that, after 8 years of making a complete mess of the Ghanaian economy, the John Mahama-led NDC government has decided to not only negatively tag our local industry, but take us back to the dark days in our history.”

He said the remark smacks of how low the current government has sunk since measures should rather be prescribed to encourage local industries to thrive.

“This brings back memories of terror on private entrepreneurship; and as a people, we must condemn such utterances in our political discourse.

“We are therefore calling on the Mr. Julius Debrah to apologise for the irresponsible statement, and also to the manufacturers of Kalyppo and the general public.”
