The High Court has threatened to release four alleged accomplices of Chinese Galamsey queen, Aisha Huang, for lack of interpreters.
Her Ladyship Lydia Osei Marfo asserted that she would be compelled to release the accomplices either conditionally or unconditionally if the situation is not resolved by the next adjourned date, Monday, November 21, 2022.
The four accomplices, a Vietnamese and three Chinese, were first arraigned on September 16, 2022, but their pleas were not accepted for lack of interpreters.
The court subsequently ordered the Registrar to facilitate the appearance of interpreters to assist in the prosecution.
In court on Tuesday, the Registrar indicated that though steps had been taken to hire the services of an interpreter from the Ghana Institute of Languages, the assigned interpreter was out of the jurisdiction and could not be available for the trial.
According to the Registrar, secondary arrangements made to have the interpreter via Zoom had proved unsuccessful.
Her Ladyship Osei said the situation was frustrating the activities of the court.
Aisha Huang is facing new charges after her arrest for illegal mining in Ghana.
The new charges were filed after she was arraigned virtually before the Criminal Division of the High Court.
The new charges are undertaking a mining operation without a license, facilitating the participation of persons engaged in a mining operation, and the illegal employment of foreigners and entering Ghana while prohibited from re-entry.
