A leading member of the Convention People’s Party, Kwame Jantuah, has questioned the sample of a pre-election survey by the Center for Democratic Development (CDD), which suggests widespread vote buying in the country.

The governance think tank in the survey found the National Democratic Congress as the party leading in vote buying.

A total of 51 per cent of those surveyed claimed the Mahama-led government is offering gift in exchange for their votes while the New Patriotic Party came second with a 32 per cent.

But commenting on the survey report on Saturday’s edition of TV3|3FM New Day, Mr Jantuah argued the sample size of the survey was not realistic.

‘‘2,400 over [in] I think 16 districts. Is that a realistic sample size to be able to come to this conclusion?” he asked.

Though Mr Jantuah who is the Vice Chairman of the Public Interest Accountability Committee condemned the practice of vote buying by either government or political parties, the CDD needn’t wait till elections to come out with such a survey.

“It is wrong for any government and political parties to hand out gifts to people for vote but the CDD and other institutions should not wait till election time to bring this out,’’ he said.

For him, vote buying is a two-way affair, and that the people should also be blamed.

“There’s something in law called offer and acceptance, so it’s a two way thing. If you look at the survey, the people were willing to sell and the politician goes to buy, am not saying it’s a good thing but it means the people don’t understand the exercise of voting a political party into power.’’
