DDEP: Sophia Akuffo’s public spiritedness must be encouraged – Adongo

The Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga Central constituency, Isaac Adongo has praised former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo for picketing at the Ministry of Finance to demand the exemption of pensioners in the ongoing domestic debt exchange programme.

He lauded the former Chief Justice for her boldness and for speaking truth to power.

In an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Citi TV, Mr. Adongo said Sophia Akuffo’s “level of public-spiritedness is what we need in our country and I can tell you that she was not there because of her funds, but she went there to fight for her colleagues who have served this country and have to be treated this way with their funds.”

He further stressed that the government’s refusal to fully engage the pensioners and other individual bondholders in the ongoing programme is in contravention of the natural justice rule and an illegal drawing of powers from the constitution and so to have someone as bold as the former Chief Justice to make a bold statement with her presence at the Finance Ministry must be encouraged.

“She has paid her dues and still paying her dues by going to the Finance Ministry to picket to point out to the Finance Minister that what he is doing is illegal”

The financial management analyst turned legislator further admonished the government to refrain from borrowing to service its debt to save itself and the nation from bitter initiatives such as the domestic debt exchange programme.
