The Electoral Commission says it is yet to establish how many of the over 56,000 voters whose names were removed from the country’s electoral register have re-registered in the ongoing nationwide re-registration exercise.
The Commission announced Thursday that a total of 1,003,812 people on the voters’ register have been verified biometrically within three-days of the voters exhibition and re-registration exercise across the country which started on July 18 and is expected to end on August 7.
The exercise is also to re-register the more than 56,000 people whose names were deleted from the register for using National Health Insurance card as proof of identity. The deletion followed a Supreme Court order to the Commission after the Court declared the use of the card as void.
Speaking on Onua FM’s Kokromoti on the current affairs talk show, Ghana Dadwene, Deputy Communication Director of the EC, Yussif Alhassan Ayuba said they were yet to collate how many people out of NHIS registered voters whose names were deleted have re-registered.
“As at the time we were releasing the press statement [Thursday], we had not had the figures from all 10 regions, that is why we could not publish that information. Immediately it comes to us, we shall make it available,” Mr Ayuba told Onua FM.
Meanwhile, he urged all the affected persons to ensure they re-register before the deadline on July 28, 2016.
He also encouraged those whose names are already in the register to visit any of the exhibition centres to have their names and details biometrically checked, adding “I wish that more people would have checked their biometric details by now.
