Mafi-Tsawla (V/R), July 1, GNA – The Volta Regional Directorate of the Department of Gender has organised a day’s sensitisation programme for Community Watch Committees (CWCs) in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region.
The event held under the chairmanship of Togbe Akliku Ahorney II, Chief of Mafi Dadoboe, brought together community members, students, teachers, religious leaders, assembly members and unit committee members.
It was supported by the UNFPA and aimed at building the capacity of members of the Committee on addressing the issues of teenage pregnancy, child marriage and gender-based violence.
Mrs Thywill Eyra Kpe, Volta Regional Director of Department of Gender said teenage pregnancy, child marriage and gender-based violence were having serious toll on the holistic development of children.
She said parental neglect was a major factor contributing to high rate of teenage pregnancy and, thus, charged parents to provide good parenting to their children.
Mrs Kpe said it was important that conscious efforts were made to create the right conditions and environment for children to develop and achieve their goals.
The Director urged parents to prioritise the wellbeing of their children and ensure that their basic needs were provided at all times.
She encouraged members of the community watch committee to continuously promote and protect the rights and wellbeing of children within the area.
Mr Israel Akrobortu, Volta Regional Director of the Department of Children asked religious leaders to use their platforms to address issues affecting children.
He said each and everyone had a role to play in protecting the rights and wellbeing of children and ensuring that they had the best training to prepare them for future roles.
Togbi Akliku Ahorney II, Chief of Mafi Dadoboe described teenage pregnancy situation in the district as worry and wonder why the district was not making improved progress regarding the issue.
The Department also used the event to donate some souvenirs such as Wellington boots, flashlights, mosquito repellent, and branded shirts to members of the watch committees to facilitate their work.
