Drama unfolded at a farming community in the Shama District of the Western Region last Saturday when the body of a 59-year-old Police chief inspector was exhumed by the Police in the area over a burial dispute.
The family of the late Christian Addy Amankrah of the Sekondi Police MTTD was said to have sidelined the widow, Nana Adwoa Edumaba II, over claims that she among others, did not take good care of the deceased when he was alive, especially when he suffered stroke.
The widow’s name was consequently left out of the obituary printed by the family and was further denied access to the burial ceremony to perform her final rites, something that was said to have angered the Police officers Sekondi.
The remains of the late officer which was laid in state at Assorko Essaman where the incident happened, was hurriedly carried by the family to the cemetery at Apimanim at about 7:30am for burial when they got information that the Police coming with the widow to perform their final rites.
Family sources say their action was to prevent the widow from having access to say goodbye to her late husband in line with tradition.
The Police arrived to the event grounds only to hear their former colleague had been buried, compelling them to rush to the cemetery where they exhumed the mortal remains back to the funeral grounds.
The action of the Police was said to have angered the family members who removed the canopies they had mounted for the funeral and ordered the sound spinners to stop playing music but that did not deter the officers from going ahead to perform their final rites together with the widow.
They later took the body in the coffin back to the cemetery and re-buried it at about 12:00pm.
The widow, who is the queen mother of Ekumfi Nanaben, told Connect FM the action of the family is intended to take over a property she acquired with her late husband for the 33 years they were in marriage.
