Sources close to the Electoral Commission of Ghana have hinted to Onua News about the possibility of eligible voters who could not register during the limited exercise getting registered for the 2016 polls.
Onua News has gathered the Commission will sit on Thursday, July 14 to take a decision on the various petitions brought before it concerning eligible voters who could not register.
During the limited voter registration exercise, from April 28 to May 18, there were quite a number of complaints that students in particular could not register due to the clashing of the exercise with end-of-semester examinations.
Though the Head of Communications of the Commission Eric Dzakpasu has told Onua FM that the ten days given to NHIS registrants whose names were deleted will strictly be for them, eligible voters could also be accepted.
“To prevent eligible voters who do not have their names on the register from registering, we have provided pictures alongside the names of all who registered with the NHIS at the various centers.”
He said though there are concerns from various civil society groups on the large number of persons who could not register during the limited registration, there was enough time for anybody to have registered at that time.
“The 2012 mass registration was done within 10 days and 2014 registration too was done within 10 days. So I believe that if you want to register as a citizen of your country 10 days is enough for you to do it,” Mr. Dzakpasu told Onua News.
