The Electoral Commission will take presidential nominations on Thursday, September 29 and Friday, September 30, its Chair has confirmed.

Mrs Charlotte Osei made this known on Thursday when she appeared on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana.

The timetable for the 2016 elections had been largely contingent upon the date for the elections.

After Parliament rejected EC’s proposal to have elections on November 7, 2016, a revision has been made to EC’s timetable leading up to the polls.

Though the entire timetable is yet to be made public, snippets have been made available.

Continuous voter registration, for instance, is planned from August 19 to August 26.

Next month – in which the presidential nominations will be taken – is also likely to also see the acceptance of nominations for parliamentary candidates.

‘Expecting more’

The Electoral Commissioner, on Thursday’s programme, expressed surprise at the number of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card holders detected and eliminated from the register as per the Supreme Court ruling.

“I was surprised at the figure because I was expecting more. I was expecting more because of all the rhetoric that had happened around it.”

She explained that a directive was sent to all district directors of elections to help in the deletion.

Though 56,772 names were deleted, only 22,107 were able to re-register between 18 – 28 July. A second window was open on August 5 to August 12 for those who failed to re-register.
