Management of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) says its workers only marked the UN International Day of Public Workers in an exercise rather than a demonstration or protest as earlier reported.
Some workers of ECG on Thursday, June 23 demonstrated against government’s privatization of the company.
The workers clad in red carried placards some of which read ‘Mr. President, think about the Ghanaian’, ‘Stop ECG Concession now’, ‘How many Ghanaians can pay electricity with PSP in place?????’ among others.
But the Greater Accra Regional Public Relations Officer, Eric Asante, insists the exercise was not a protest.
“It is not true, we as ECG workers under no region or district have demonstrated,” he stressed.
“As you know once you celebrate a day there is a theme you pick on and talk about, either you celebrate something you think is important or a reservation in relation to your company and as it were ECG picked on a concession which we found as a reservation in our organization.”
He said the action was only to express displeasure against government’s decision to privatize the Company.
He said after the “celebration” of the Day everybody went back to work.
“It was done within our compound. Demonstrations are done on the street which we didn’t do that”.
