All customers of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will benefit from a major relief from government.

After an “extensive consultation” with stakeholders in the power sector, government provided the reliefs to include customers with consumption rate of more than 50 units.

Previously, government subsidies have been limited to those who consume power below 50 units.

The reliefs take effect from July 1 as promised by President John Dramani Mahama.

A release signed by the Manaing Director of the Company explained that instead of GHp67 per unit for the first 50 units of consumption, a rate of GHp34 per unit will be applied to all customers.

“In the case of non-residential and industrial customers, some subsidies have been applied to the energy charges to reduce the total bill for such customers,” the release signed by Robert Dwamena on Monday, July 4 said.

New reckoner

The release also announced that a new reckoner to calculate customers’ total bill has been introduced.

The reckoner is to guide customers in the application of the new reliefs.

“The reckoner will be deployed to all our regional and district offices as well as our customer service centers to assist ECG customers accordingly.”
