Actress-turned-musician Efia Odo recently recounted a troubling experience she faced while living in the USA, shedding light on the challenges of being Black in a predominantly African-American community.
Reflecting on her high school years, she revealed how classmates subjected her to hurtful taunts due to her African heritage, prompting her to fabricate Jamaican roots to avoid further ridicule.
Efia shared this personal story on the X app in response to a video interview featuring Nigerian artist Davido, who highlighted similar struggles faced by Africans in the past when identifying their nationality.
”When I was in junior high school, my African-American classmates used to tease me for being African. They used to call me names like African booty scratcher so I would lie and say I’m half Jamaican. Sad but true,” Efia Odo revealed.
