The Black Maidens could not make it to the semi-final stage of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after losing 1-2 to Korea DPR.

The Maidens were seeking to stop the Asian champions, who had not lost coming into Thursday’s quarter final match.

Korea DPR opened the score in the 34th minute from the spot. Grace Acheampong, having lost possession just outside the box, fouled Pyon Un-Gong, who had been sent through to score. Kim Po-Ui converted the resultant penalty.

The Maidens fought hard in the second half with Captain Sandra Owusu-Ansah leading the charge. Though the Koreans also made incursions, it was the Maidens who got lucky in the 81st minute.

An acrobatic kick by Philicity Asuako from a corner kick found Gifty Acheampong, who headed past her opponents’ goalkeeper.

With the match almost certain to go into extra time, substitute Linda Amoako brought Ja Un Yong down within minutes after coming on.

The resultant freekick saw the Koreans snatch the winner.

Korea DPR will play Venezuela in the first semi-final match on Monday.
