Fire guts EC offices at Tepa; items destroyed

EC - Fire1The Electoral Commission’s office at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North in the Ashanti Region has been gutted by fire destroying office equipment and gadgets.

It is not clear whether electoral materials and equipment were destroyed in the fire which started around 3:20 am Monday. The cause of the fire is not yet established.

The quick intervention by the personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service prevented the fire from spreading to the offices of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and that of the National Health Insurance.

It took almost an hour for the fire personnel to bring the fire under control. Reports say all documents in the offices as well as air conditioners and computers have been destroyed.

Confirming the incident to 3News, Ashanti Regional Deputy Commissioner of the EC, Lawrence Sarpong, said the fire did not affect the store of the EC in the district but could not tell whether electoral materials were affected.

He told TV3’s William Evans-Nkum that he has dispatched someone to ascertain the extent of damage.
