An Accra High Court has acquitted and discharged former Member of Parliament for Nkoranza North Eric Amoateng over a forged passport.

He was set free on Tuesday after the presiding judge, Mrs Justice Vivian Amoah noted that the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the accused knew that he was travelling with a fake document.

Mr Amoateng was alleged to have travelled to Ghana with a female Ghanaian Passport, after serving his conviction abroad.

The state had argued that after serving his jail term in the United States for possessing heroin, a narcotic drug, Mr. Amoateng was released from prison on July 30, 2014.

On August 7, the same year, the accused person arrived at the Kotoka International Airport on board a Delta Airline flight at 1420 hours, and while going through arrival formalities, it was detected that he had in his possession a Ghanaian Passport, which was allegedly forged, with the bio-data page substituted.

He pleaded not guilty and after two years of court wrangling, the prosecution, according to the court, was not able to adduce enough evidence to warrant his conviction.

He was subsequently declared a free man on Tuesday.
