Ghana’s 4 X 100m team could only clock 43.37s to place 8th in Heat 1 of the women’s 4 by 100m event at the ongoing Olympic Games.
Africa’s fastest 4 X 100m women’s team prior to Rio 2016 raced in the same heats as Jamaica.
Ghana was represented by Flings Owusu-Agyapong, Gemma Acheampong, Beatrice Gyaman and Janet Amponsah, the quartet that smashed the national record last month.
Curiously, Nigeria managed to make it into Saturday’s final with a time on 42.55s in Heat 2.
In Thursday’s Heat 1, Jamaica won in 41.79s followed by Great Britain (41.93) and Ukraine (42.49s).
Canada and China also managed to go through though the Asian nation could miss out if world champions USA surpasses them in a race scheduled for late Thursday.
Germany won Heat 2 in 42.18s while Nigeria and Trinidad & Tobago (42.62s) came 2nd and 3rd respectively.
The display by the relay team sums up Ghana’s performance in Brazil, with each of the 14 participants failing to make it beyond the first round.
