President John Dramani Mahama has made a call to Ghanaians not to distract the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in the discharge of its duties.

He expressed confidence in the state election-organising body in doing a good job this year.

Addressing Muslims at the Black Star Square on Wednesday, July 6 to mark the end of Ramadan, President Mahama dismissed fears of election-related troubles expressed in some quarters.

“I don’t believe there will be any trouble this year,” he stressed.

“We have voted six times already successfully. This is going to be the seventh time we are voting after we adopted the 1992 constitution and I believe that we are going to vote in peace.”

The president, who will be up for reelection in the polls, expressed firm belief that “whoever emerges as president will do so through a fair and transparent manner”.

The stakes in this year’s elections are said to be high as it comes in the wake of a Supreme Court determination of results the last time.

Already, there have been a number of suits against the Electoral Commission with the main bone of contention being the voters’ register.

The Commission, in the latest appearance in court, was ordered by the Supreme Court to delete names of persons who used National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards to register.

President Mahama admonished all to leave the EC to conduct its work in peace.

“In the meantime, let’s give the Electoral Commission the peace of mind to do its work,” he urged.

“They have done it before. Indeed, our Electoral Commission is one of the best commissions in the whole world and we have confidence in them to be able to conduct elections. So, let’s leave them peacefully to conduct these elections and I am sure Ghanaians will be the better for it.”
