The Government of Ghana has been sued through the Lands Commission for a sum of GH¢120 million for demolishing an apartment complex in the current location of the National Cathedral project.
A writ of summon by the plaintiff, Waterstone Realty Limited indicated its two-storey multipurpose building complex was compulsorily possessed and demolished in 2018 as part of preparations for the construction of the National Cathedral and therefore, is demanding the amount as damages and compensation.
Part of the writ read: “An order directed at the defendants to pay the plaintiff of the sum USD$4,721,000.00 being the market value of the two-storey multipurpose building complex at the time of compulsory possession and demolition by Defendants.”
The writ is also praying the court to allow “the defendants to pay the plaintiff the sum of USD$995,508.52 being the difference in terms of the established market value of the plaintiff’s property on the land being the sum USD$4,721,000.00 and the actual value of the property as of May 2018 when the defendant repossessed the property being the value of the two-storey multipurpose building”.
The Lands Commission is expected to make an appearance within eight days after the service of the writ else “judgment may be given in your absence without further notice to you.”
