Grant predicts doom if Minister/GFA impasse is not resolved

Ghana coach Avram Grant believes the events of this week could spell doom for Ghana football if issues are not resolved between the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The Israeli has had to prepare his side for a Nations Cup qualifier against Rwanda on Saturday against the rancorous backdrop of who pays for plane tickets, lack of camping accommodation and bonuses all triggered by his decision to name a full strength side for a game that doesn’t mean much.

Ghana has already amassed 13 points in the group and have effectively qualified for Africa’s biggest football event hence the notion that the final game doesn’t really matter.

“I have spent a long time in football, I must say I haven’t faced things like I saw this week. But I am not a politician and I will not go to politician areas, who is fighting with who, I am a football man and I will do what is best for football,” he said at a media briefing ahead of the final AFCON qualifying game against Rwanda at the Accra Sports Stadium on Saturday.

“The Black Stars is more important than any politician, than GFA and any other individual. It’s not the first, the players need to play, the coach need to coach, the others need to give support and all the facilities that they can. It is not going well at the moment but I will not let any of this disrupt the team. It will not happen,” Grant added.

Albeit the result of the Rwanda game will not have any bearing on Ghana’s qualification, Grant needs to assess his squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers which begins next month.

In all of this, the players need to be commended for the level of patriotism and selflessness they have shown in the past few days amidst all the brouhaha.

Grant fears the events of this week could trigger a throwback to the disgraceful events of the 2014 world cup but was full of praise for the way the players have responded to all of this.

“The players have shown great commitment and in this way, don’t take it for granted. I never saw the players pay the ticket, it doesn’t matter if they can afford it or cannot afford it. They pay the ticket, they show commitment that they show also on the pitch and we need to respect that.”

It’s been an already tough week for Ghanaians amidst all of this and the least the Stars can do is restore the smiles of the faces of the people with a win on Saturday.
