Hardi Yakubu to step down as Fighter-General of Economic Fighters League

The longest-serving Fighter-General of the radical Nkrumahist movement, the Economic Fighters League, Hardi Yakubu, is set to step down from his position to take on a new challenge with Africans Rising.

From the inception of the Nkrumahist movement in 2016, Mr. Yakubu has contributed immensely to the mobilization and advocacy drive of the movement and has led the charge in many protests demanding a change in Ghana’s flawed democracy.

Some of the noble initiatives commenced during his tenure include the movement’s #NewConstitutionNOW campaign which seeks a total overhaul of Ghana’s constitution and replaced with a new and improved social and people-centered one.

He was also instrumental in the fight against the Ghana School of Law’s lower admissions and subsequent demands for the opening up of legal education.

Mr. Yakubu also led the movement in many solidarity protests demanding human rights in other African states such as Sudan, Uganda, and others.

But he has recently taken up additional responsibilities at Africans Rising beginning with being the group’s acting executive coordinator from October 2022 until February 2023 when he was made the substantive executive coordinator of the group.

Announcing the decision of Mr. Yakubu to resign, the Fighters in a statement said: “After discussion with Fighters leadership over the past couple of months, it has been agreed that this move is necessary towards the goal of African unity in our lifetime. Our beloved Fighter-General Hardi Yakubu will therefore step down from his position, effective 1 March 2023.”

Namata Serumaga-Musisi who is the current commander in charge of the Fighter’s communications and advocacy has been nominated to stand in as acting Fighter-General.

The Fighters also thanked Mr. Yakubu for his service and wished him good tidings in his next endeavour.

“We must thank our outgoing Fighter-General for his selflessness, his commitment, and his brilliance. With him, we have set a solid framework towards the revolution we seek, and we will continue to collaborate with him toward African unity and prosperity.”

The young activist replaces Mohammed Lamin Saidykhan and Coumba Toure as coordinators of Africans Rising which is a Pan-African movement of people and organisations, working for peace, justice, and dignity.
