Commercial drivers in Hohoe in the Volta Region on Monday abandoned their vehicles to patch potholes that have ridden the various roads within the municipality.
Passengers were left stranded by the action of the drivers which started from 6:00am to 5:00pm, causing most commuters to trek to their destinations.
The drivers say the deplorable nature of the roads in the town, particularly from the Hohoe traffic light area through the Zongo and Asabo to Bungalow areas, have been causing serious damage to their vehicles leading to high cost of maintenance at frequent intervals.
They all gathered Monday morning, to as a temporary measure, fill the hundreds of what they described as “man holes” on the roads in the municipality with laterite.
“This won’t last because we are in the rainy season. If we leave the road in that [bad] state too our car will damage,” Kekeli Ampotia, one of the drivers told 3News Tuesday
Meanwhile, the drivers have issued a three-week ultimatum to the Hohoe Municipal Assembly to fix the roads or face their wrath with a series of demonstration.
“We are sending a signal to the assembly to do something about the road. We will give them three weeks failure to which we will demonstrate,” Mr Ampotia said.
According to the commercial drivers, the Assembly has consistently refused to heed to their pleas under the pretext that the roads form part of the Eastern Corridor roads which has been given to contractors to work.
