The outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey has revealed he was approached with a whopping $100,000 by politicians to woo him.
He added that the desperate politicians upped their bid with a house that has a swimming pool at the plush Trasacco Valley and a 4X4 vehicle.
Though he would not mention persons who tried to court his support or the party the agents were working for, he noted that the unknown party had wanted to silence him with the bribe.
“Politicians have tried all means to muzzle me, to get me but they can’t, they come with bribes, fat envelopes, $100, 000…I want everybody to listen that politicians came to my house with $100, 000 and also with the promises that if you keep quiet we will give you a house at Trasacco with swimming pool.
“We will give you Four Wheel drive [vehicle] but you know what, these people were lucky that I do not have big dogs in my house else I would have released the dogs for them to bite them.”
The respected man of God have been linked to the largest opposition New Patriotic Party by some persons aligned to the governing National Democratic Congress, mainly due to comments he made that they find unpalatable.
He has for the first time responded to the allegation and flatly rejected it.
“So those who are saying Re.v Martey is NPP, may be they pay my NPP dues,” he retorted, pointing out that the allegation is an attack on his integrity as an astute professor.
“How can a full professor sell his conscience to one political party?” the man who claimed he is “more complex” than people thought wondered in an interaction with the media.
Rev. Martey also enquired if those who claimed he has been dinning with opposition leader, Nana Akufo-Addo are the ones who wash their plats after dinning.
The outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana also denied that the church is supporting the NPP.
He is on record to have said that the party would partner the NPP in development at the Church’s general assembly when Akufo-Addo visited them.
Insisting that the Church “would not support any party”, Rev. Martey explained that the Church has been partnering the party in power for decades.
“The Presbyterian Church of Ghana does not belong to any party, and the Presbyterian Church of Ghana does not support any party. The Presbyterian Church of Ghana is in existence before all the political parties came…all governments that come to rule our dear nation, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana partnered them,” he underscored.
He recalled the Presbyterian Church of Ghana partnered the present NDC government and all previous governments including the NPP under former President Kufuor.
