The incumbent Member of Parliament for Kwesimintsim constituency Joe Baidoo-Ansah has lost the NPP parliamentary primary in the Western Region.
At a fiercely contested primary on Tuesday, Joe Mensah polled 187 votes to beat the MP who obtained 122 votes.
The election was supposed to have taken place about 16 months ago, but was confronted with some legal battles. Joe Mensah, who was dissatisfied with the party’s decision to disqualify him after he appeared before the constituency vetting committee, went to court to challenge that decision.
The court recently cleared him to contest the election, which was held today.
The primary was nearly marred by allegations of vote-buying and interference by the party hierarchy.
At the end of the exercise, Mr. Kwabena Asante who represented the Electoral Commission in Effia-Takoradi-Kwesimintsim declared Mr Joe Mensah as the winner.
