Interdicted High Court judge Justice Paul Uuter Dery has petitioned the President of the Ghana Journalists’ Association (GJA) to withdraw the GJA Journalist of the Year Award given to ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas last Saturday.
Anas was decorated with the PAV Ansah Award for his exposé on judicial corruption, which led to the interdiction of 34 judges, some of whom were subsequently sacked.
But the award to Mr Anas has not gone down well with Justice Dery, who claims it could be prejudicial to the outcome of his case in court against the journalist.
He is seeking damages against the multiple award-winning journalist for his “unconstitutional” work, which he claims inter alia violated his privacy.
“I adopt the same sentiments and state that the Award the GJA honoured Anas Aremeyaw Anas with has the propensity of sending wrong signals to journalists especially young and upcoming ones that blatant violations of our constitutional order pays,” Justice Dery states in his petition dated August 30.
“You acquire fame and wealth by violating the constitutional order. That is what the GJA Award to Anas Aremeyaw Anas on 27th August, 2016 signifies.”
Justice Dery says GJA President’s response to his petition will inform his next line of action.
“I am determined to use all lawful and legal means at my disposal to ensure that the provisions of the 1992 constitution are upheld and complied with by all persons.”
