Ghanaian Olympic swimmer Kaya Forson says she hopes her appearance at Rio would encourage a lot of other Ghanaians especially girls to try out other non-traditional sports.
The 14-year old became the first Ghanaian to compete at the Olympics in swimming and the youngest ever even though her personal best of 2:16:02 secs in 200m freestyle was not good enough to take her into the next stage.
She is however delighted with everything and says she has learned an invaluable lot from the experience.
“I was nervous yesterday but this morning I woke up ready to go and excited”, she said.
“I visualized my race and I think it went exactly how I visualized it. I am going to take the experience with me. I am going to take the fact that I have to work harder and train harder and hopefully I will return.”
Young Kaya Forson is hoping to inspire young women to try new sports and build themselves up for a big future.
She hopes her story can inspire many young Ghanaians, Africans and across the world.
“It’s been amazing for me. I hope to inspire more women to try new sports, try new things and go on adventures,” she told the Ghana media team in Rio.
The Spain-based swimmer also said she had been overwhelmed by the media attention.
