In a 3-day ‘homecoming and giving back to their alma mater’, the Ketasco 2000 Year Group has taken students of Keta SHS through oral health education, motivational talks and dental screening.

About 50 members of the year group were in attendance while many also joined in actively via various digital platforms.

The group was received by the Headmaster Mr. D.K. Sedanu-Kwawu, the Assistant Headmistress (Academic) Mrs. Enyonam Tay, Assistant Headmistress (Welfare) Mrs. Essie Sosa, Head of ICT Mr. Paul Heloo, Head of Mathematics, Mr.Samuel Agbematu and Mr. Wemegah an Agricultural Science teacher.

Approximately 1000 students and staff participated in the forum and about 400 underwent dental screening.

Opening the event, the Assistant Headmistress for Welfare, Mrs. Essie Sosa spoke about the importance of old students giving back to the young ones and urged the students to pay maximum attention.

An engineer, entrepreneur and volunteer, Mr Elikplim Senaya who also doubles as the Secretary for the Ketasco 2000 Year Group spoke to students on the topic “Using Technology to Drive Academic Success”.

He enlightened students on the numerous free tutorials and productivity tools available to them on the internet. Rather than the trivial use of social media and the like, he advised them to use these tools to help them in their studies eg. study group discussions, accessing free tutorials on various subjects etc.

Speaking on “Overcoming Obstacles”, Mrs. Fortress Sape encouraged students to see challenges as opportunities to reach higher grounds.

She told students how she followed her passion for accounting after studying General Science back in Ketasco to reiterate the point that their careers are not limited by the subjects they currently read.

She also enumerated some key success strategies to help them succeed.

Miss Elorm Kudjawu, in her presentation, demystified professional nursing to the students. A General Arts student back in Ketasco and currently a senior nurse at Korlebu Teaching Hospital, she encouraged interested students to consider joining the Nursing profession by educating them on the qualities of a professional nurse.

She also used the occasion to admonish the students on the importance of personal hygiene and etiquette.

An Assistant Superintendent of Immigration, Mr. Cyril Dziedzorm Akakpo spoke on combining extracurricular activities like sports with academic studies.

He narrated how his sports talent both as a footballer and a field athlete was nurtured back in Ketasco and how he balanced his time to ensure his academic performance did not suffer.

He encouraged the students to take the various extracurricular activities seriously as these keep them healthy and alert to take on their studies.

KETASCO2Rounding up the Motivational Talks, Dr Richard Selormey who is the President of the Ketasco 2000 Year Group encouraged students on setting higher goals. He reiterated previous speakers’ main points and urged students to put those advice to good use.

Also the Executive Director for Oral Health Express Ghana, Dr Selormey further educated participants on Oral Health. He mentioned the benefits of maintaining good Oral while demonstrating best practices in using items such as floss, mouthwash, toothbrush and toothpaste.

In his closing remarks, Mr. Samuel Agbematu, Head of Mathematics of the school, was full of praise for the Ketasco 2000 Year Group for the initiative. He emphasized how important these exchanges between past students and the current positively impact the student as well as staff.

The Year group in collaboration with Oral Health Express Ghana, then offered students, teaching and non-teaching staff as well as some members from the community free dental screening.

All those screened went home with toothpaste and a toothbrush each and those with serious dental disorders were referred for treatment at the Keta District Hospital per arrangements made to that effect.

After activities on campus, the Year Group held a meeting at the Keta Beach Hotel where the Executives used the opportunity to outdoor their vision and success strategies to positively impact members, their alma mater and surrounding community.

The Year Group’s website (www.ketasco2000.org ) was launched and members were enrolled onto it.

The group later toured various tourist destinations in the locality e.g. the Aborigines Resort, the Lagoons Resort and spent some time to socialize and network at the clean, golden sand beach which identifies Keta.

The year group plans to liaise with local authorities to hold similar events as well as entrepreneurial seminars to impact the community at large in the near future.
