Friday’s election to choose a presiding member to steer the affairs of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has been postponed due to the unavailability of a judge to administer the oath of office to the winner.
The election which was scheduled for Friday, September 30 has consequently been rescheduled for Tuesday, October 4 by which time the judges and magistrates in the city would have resumed work from their annual general conference currently ongoing in Accra.
For the fifth consecutive time last Tuesday, the members of the assembly failed to elect a presiding member as the only contender, Nana Kofi Senya, failed to get two-thirds majority in Tuesday’s referendum to become the presiding Member.
This was after his key contender, Adumhene Baffour Adjei Kesse, had prior to Tuesday’s election served notice the Electoral Commission of his decision to step down “in the interest of the development of Kumasi”.
Only 62 assembly members voted YES for his bid while 65 of them voted NO with one rejected ballot. This means he failed to secure the two-thirds majority required to win the presiding membership.
This compelled the KMA to fix Friday September 30 for fresh elections but had to be called off at the last minute due to the absence of a judge in the city.
Meanwhile, Akoma FM’s Antwi Boasiako reports that most assembly member are not aware of the Tuesday’s election.
