Students of Koforidua Polytechnic have called on authorities to reduce the 2016/2017 fees, with immediate effect.
In a petition submitted to management, the students claim the increment is more than 70 per cent.
“This emphasizes the belief that tertiary education is becoming an exclusive preserve of the middle class and the wealthy,” the petition submitted on Monday, July 25 opined.
The petition expressed worry how tuition fees have increased from GH¢150 to GH¢300 and matriculation fees from GH¢40 to GH¢92.
Final year students have also been billed to pay industrial attachment fees.
“The increment is very outrageous and we plead for a total reduction. This increment will affect some of us who are already struggling financially to focus on our academic work.”
The situation, according to the petition, is likely to cause mass deferment of programmes as many may not be able to register.
The students therefore appealed to government to step in by way of subsidising polytechnic education “to help management reduce the scheduled fees for next academic year”.
