The Deputy Youth and Sports Minister, Vincent Asamoah, is urging Ghanaians to accept the apology from former Black Stars player, Sulley Ali Muntari, over his indefinite suspension from the Black Stars.
Muntari was suspended for an unprovoked physical attack on Black Stars management committee memberm, Moses Armah, at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He was suspended together with Kevin-Prince Boateng.
The midfielder in a letter to the Ghana Football Association apologised to Ghanaians for “any embarrassment that my action in Brazil brought to the Black Stars Team, the Ghana Football Association and my beloved country Ghana”
He stated he is “deeply sorry” for his action and accordingly apologised to all stakeholders who were offended by the said action that received condemnation from some Ghanaians and football critics.
Commenting on the latest move by the Saudi Arabia-based player on Onua FM Wednesday, the Deputy Minister said once Muntari has accepted his fault and accordingly apologised, Ghanaians should as well forgive him
He told host of Yen Sempa, Kwame Karikari, that the decision by Muntari is a welcomed one especially so because “Ghana has invested in him”, adding “we will need experienced players like him to be in the Black Stars. His input will contribute to the development of sports in Ghana.
“We need everybody’s support in Ghana not in the area of sports alone, and we know the qualities of Sulley but the coach must take that decision on whether to call him back or not”.
Captaincy
Asked on whether Sulley should be given the captaincy should he be called into the Black Stars, Mr. Asamoah said “we should look at his composure as he comes back because I know he has learnt a lot that is why he came out with the apologies”.
He added: “if he is able to humble himself to a younger player who is a captain” that should be enough evidence for the whole country to know that he has indeed learnt his lessons but noted the captaincy issue will “depend on the coach”
