Two suspected notorious armed robbers who the Police say have been terrorizing residents in the Ashanti Region have been shot dead
The two, whose nicknames have been given as 50 Cent and Lumba, were killed Tuesday dawn in a sting operation by the Ashanti Regional Police Command to capture them.
50 Cent has been linked to a number of robbery syndicate in the region and has been on the Police wanted list for months, TV3’s Williams Evans Nkum has reported.
He and his gang are said to have tormented several residents, especially in the Kumasi metropolis and its surrounding towns, and most of their attacks have resulted in the killing of their victims with others suffering various degree of injuries.
Sting operation
Sources within the Police say one of 50 Cent’s right wing leaders, Lumba, was arrested Monday evening following police intelligence.
The suspect, upon interrogation, was said to have named 50 Cent as the gang leader and promised to assist the police cause his arrest.
The Police used the Lumba to set up a meeting with 50 Cent at Asafo Ahmadiyya Roundabout in Kumasi under the pretext of delivering message to him (50 Cent). A Police officer disguised himself at the meeting point.
Upon arrival at the meeting point, 50 Cent was said to have realised it was a set up and an attempt to capture him. He then fired at the undercover officer but missed him; somethign that caused the officer to return fire, sources told our correspondent
“The exchange of gunshots led to the killing of 50 Cent”, the sources told Evans Nkum.
The arrested suspect, Lumba, who also attempted to take advantage of the melee to escape in a handcuff was also shot by the Police in the process but died while being taking to hospital for medical attention, the sources said.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command is expected to brief the media on the incident Tuesday morning.
