The Labour (Amendment) Bill, 2023 has been introduced, proposing crucial changes to maternity and paternity leave policies.
Sponsored by National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament Francis-Xavier Sosu, the bill aims to extend maternity leave from three to four months, with an additional two weeks in specific cases.
Sosu emphasizes compassionate reforms, stating, “I request an amendment of Section 57(1) of the Labour Act to extend the period of maternity leave from 12 weeks to 16 weeks (three months to four months), with the option for additional two weeks in the case of caesarean, stillbirth(s) or multiple births, and to provide for related matters.” The bill also addresses the absence of specific provisions for women who experience pregnancy loss.
Notably, the proposal includes provisions for paid paternity leave for men for a minimum of seven days and a maximum period of four weeks, with the option of an additional two weeks in case of caesarean section, stillbirth(s), or multiple births of the spouse.
This paid paternity leave is intended to enable men to take care of their wives and assist new mothers with domestic chores during the critical postpartum period.
Aligning with global practices, this comprehensive bill reflects a progressive approach to family support and workplace policies.
