Miss Earth Ghana, Eyram Debora, and Ghana’s Most Beautiful queen, Esi, joined forces with traders from the Abura market at Cape Coast in the Central Region last Saturday, to clean-up the market and its surrounding.
The two beauty queens and the traders, mostly market women, cleaned and desilted choked gutters and drains in and around the market, as part of their efforts at encouraging and improving good sanitation practices in the country.
It was also part of their contribution towards the just ended Fetu Afahye of the people and chiefs of Oguaa.
Interacting with the market women, Eyram Debora underscored the need for the people to keep the earth clean saying “We need to safeguard the environment from destruction. There are many human activities that cause environmental problems and health disorders to us humans, let’s stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse, littering and open defecation”.
Miss Eyram who represents Ghana in the Miss Earth World event in Philippines in October this year, urged all stakeholders to step up their game in protecting the earth, noting she intends to projects that would enhance proper sanitation in Ghana.
The Miss Earth pageant is a global environmental event that is using beauty as an effective tool to promote environmental awareness.
Insanitary environment is an international menace causing public health problems to people
Contributing towards the solution to this global challenge, the government of Ghana in response to the 2014 Ghana cholera outbreak, initiated the national sanitation day to reduce unhygienic conditions that breed diseases and cause injuries.
