Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has received a petition seeking presidential pardon for a radio host of Accra-based Montie FM and two of his pannellist who were jailed for threatening the lives of judges of the Supreme Court.

Lawyers for three – Godwin Ako Gunn, Alistair Nelson and Salifu Maase- as well as owners of the station presented the petition to President John Mahama at the Flagstaff House in Accra on Tuesday.

The petition received signatures from several political bigwigs from the National Democratic Congress and government appointees including Deputy Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto, Minister of Gender, Women and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, Deputy Information Minister, Felix Kwakye Ofosu among others.

They joined hundreds of party supporters to mount pressure on President Mahama to activate Article 72 of the constitution which gives the President the power to give presidential pardon to persons serving jail term.

But the president has been advised by his lawyer, Tony Lithur, not to succumb to the pressure from the party foot soldiers and other government appointees to pardon the three persons who are serving a four-month jail-term each, since that could set a wrong precedent.

The three men were jailed by the Supreme Court after the court found them guilty of contempt. They were also fined GHC 10, 000 each which was payable within 24 hours. They have since paid the fines.
