Montie 3 release: National Security swerves all

The National Security swerved journalists, families, sympathizers and supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who trooped to the Nsawam Prisons to catch the glimpse of the release of the Montie 3.

As early as 5:30am, journalists from several media houses, both print and electronic, gathered in front of the Nsawam Prisons to observe and file reports for their various stations.

But they were swerved when one of the prison warders told them that the Montie 3 had been released at Akuse Prison in the same Eastern Region.

Onua FM’s Maxwell Otoo reports that the Montie three – Alistair Nelson, Godwin Ako Gunn and Salifu Maase – have been at the Nsawam Prisons until Monday when the President freed them and they were transferred to Akuse.

“Information I have gathered from the Nsawam Prisons this morning indicates that the Montie 3 have been transferred to Akuse Prisons. This was disclosed by a prison officer,” Maxwell Otoo reports.

The Montie three are being freed after President John Mahama remitted their four-month prison sentence, which was pronounced by the Supreme Court.

One of the lawyers for the three, Edudzi Tamakloe, confirmed this on his Facebook page with a post saying “happy seeing our clients after they were released from the Akuse Prison”.

Sympathizers, who had gathered, though disappointed over the announcement, were happy the Montie 3 had been released.

The Montie three were imprisoned on July 27 for criminal contempt of court after they threatened the lives of Supreme Court justices during a live programme on Montie FM in Accra.

President John Mahama eventually exercised his constitutional power on Monday, August 22 following consultations with the Council of State to free them.

A statement signed by the Minister of Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, explained that the President had taken the decision to pardon the three on “compassionate grounds” given the remorse they had demonstrated.

Lawyer Edudzi Tamakloe has therefore expressed his gratitude to President Mahama ahead of the release of the three.
