Jose Mourinho has promised trophies and the good times back at Manchester United at his unveiling as Luis Van Gaal’s successor at Old Trafford.

The former Chelsea boss has already been busy behind the scenes, sealing the marquee signing of Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic on a free transfer.

He has brought in Ivorian defender Eric Bailly and there should be an imminent announcement for the completion of the deal between the club and Dortmund star, Henrikh Mhkitaryan and has revealed he would make at least one more signing for his first season.

Mourinho believes he needs more players to make his team work.

United has been involved in transfer madness on the final day of business in the last three transfer windows. It is one problem at the club he wants to change.

“I want specialists. From this four, we have 3. Until we have the fourth we are working hard on that. When we get the fourth (signing) I can breathe. We don’t go to August 31. We do it before then,” he said.

The Portuguese is tasked with resurrecting a United side that missed out on Champions League qualification after a fifth-place in the Premier League.

Mourinho said: “I feel a bit frustrated I’m not playing CL. I’m around 130 matches. Hopefully it’s only one season I’m – we – are not there. Let’s work to try back to be back to the CL, do well in Europa League, but I want to be more aggressive and say we want to win”.

It is the second time in 3 years that United has not qualified to play in Europe’s elite competition.

Mourrinho also touched on the complicated issue on where Wayne Rooney would play and is clear in his mind the United captain should not be occupying a midfield role.

He stated: “Yes, his passing is amazing but mine is also amazing without pressure. He will be a No. 9, a No. 10, a No. 9.5, but never a No. 6 or a No. 8.”

With newcomer Pep Guardiola at the helm at City, it makes for a nice matchup in the Manchester derby when both managers meet next season.
