The governing National Democratic Congress is holding its parliamentary primary to select a candidate for the Bunkpurugu Constituency in the Northern Region today, Saturday July 23, 2016.

Five candidates are vying for the one slot. They are: Jagong Tahidu, Azumah Konlaan, Duut Bonchel Abdulai, Dr. Benson Boinkum Kolan and Bueteem Anthony Gingong.

The election which began at 7:00am at all the twenty seven polling stations is expected to end at 3:00pm, TV3’s Zubaida Ismail reports.

The primary was delayed by a court process initiated by a disqualified aspirant.

But the Tamale High Court Wednesday ruled in favour of the NDC in a case between the party and Mr. Nanburi Derrick, a failed parliamentary aspirant for the constituency.

Derrick, former MP for the area, took the party to court challenging the decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC) to delete his name from the list of qualified party members who were desirous of contesting in the primary, over allegation that he was joining Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ National Democratic Party (NDP).

But the court ruled against him and was asked to pay GHC20,000 as compensation to the party.

The New Patriotic Party’s Solomon Namliit Boar beat NDC’s Duut Bonchel Abdulai with 38.85 percent of the valid votes cast to win the seat in the 2012 elections. Interestingly, President John Dramani Mahama won in that constituency with overwhelming 64.01 percent.
