The Youth Wing of the governing National Democratic Congress in Chiana/Paga constituency in the Upper East region says it members have decided not to take part in the party’s forthcoming parliamentary primary there.
The constituency primary has been rocked by a couple of postponements. Early this month, the party decided to once again reschedule the July 9 date set for the exercise. The new date is July 16.
But the youth there have sent a strong signal of their disapproval to the leadership of the party about the new date.
“We the NDC Youth of the Chiana/Paga constituency wish to state without mincing words that we have resolved to boycott the parliamentary primary elections slated to take place on the 16 of July, 2016,” it said in a statement.
The statement explained, “This decision has been informed not only by the needless and deliberate feet dragging that prevented this constituency from holding its parliamentary primary during the mainstream party primaries calendar but most importantly the inexplicable adjournment that appears to be holding us captive yet still.
“With this apparent hide and seek how can we even vouch for the sanctity of the new aforementioned date that has been fixed?”
The group suspected that the latest postponement might have been caused by a “wrong projection” by the party that there could be “possible rowdy aftermath” of the primary that may mar the president’s visit to the region this week.
But that projection, in the assessment of the youth was unfounded because the constituency has always conducted itself after every parliamentary primary since 1992.
The statement was by NDC Youth of Chiana/Paga Constituency Hajj Seidu Sulemana and endorsed by Nyaaba Peter, Hakim Nurudeen, Achana Debora, Akolgo Ignatus and Kaba Gloria.
